BATTERSEA POWER STATION: PUBLIC ART & WAYFINDING

150 METRE MURAL LINING ELECTRIC BOULEVARD

“JOY! Collective were commissioned to inject some JOY! into the newly developed estate, DESIGNING AND CREATING public art murals and wayfinding TO LINE the 150 meters of temporary hoardings erected ON Electric Boulevard. We worked closely with the client to get an intimate insight into the history of the estate, as well as exploring the new offerings from its lastest incarnation”

You have probably noticed that London's Battersea Power Station has recently undergone a major facelift! This iconic landmark, designed and built in the 1930s by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, provided power to the population of London.

The Estate now boasts a new major shopping high street (aptly named Electric Boulevard) designed by Foster + Partners. This bustling high street serves as the primary entrance to the Estate and hosts a mix of shops, restaurants, bars, offices, and homes.

JOY! Collective were commissioned to inject some JOY! into the newly developed estate, designing and creating public art murals and wayfinding to line the 150 meters of temporary hoardings erected on Electric Boulevard.

We worked closely with the client to get an intimate insight into the history of the estate, as well as explore the new offerings from its latest incarnation. After much research and onsite exploration, we designed and painted an illustrated artwork that celebrated the wider Estate, its offerings and its heritage, from its beautifully planted gardens to its famous feathered residents, the Power Station Peregrine Falcons and everything in between. We chose a bold but unified palette to create a cohesive overall set of artworks to bring energy, colour, and intrigue to the boulevard.
