BURTS BEE’S: 3D PERSPECTIVE MURAL INSTALLATION

AN IMMERSIVE OASIS IN COVENT GARDEN

“TO PROMOTE THEIR SUSTAINABLY MADE, 100% NATURAL TINTED LIP BALM RANGE, BURT'S BEES CHALLENGED US TO CREATE AN INSTALLATION THAT EVOKED A SENSE OF NATURE'S UNTAMED BEAUTY BREAKING FREE IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT”

Burt's Bees make products with natural ingredients, using minimal processing. To promote their sustainably made, 100% natural tinted lip balm range, we were challenged to create an installation that evoked a sense of nature's untamed beauty breaking free in an urban environment.

Covent Garden was our chosen location, with its fitting history as a flower market and excellent footfall.

We went about designing, building, and hand-painting this 3D perspective floor mural to look like a little oasis of natural bliss in the bustling heart of central London. In order to achieve a realistic result, a perspective mural must be drastically elongated and viewed from a specific viewpoint. As we were unable to paint directly onto the floor of the heritage site, instead, we painted the 10-metre-long floor mural on canvas in an off-site warehouse, taking four artists and five days to complete. The landscape surrounding the mural was designed to enhance the organic transition from cobble to a tropical paradise, with the namesakes of the lip balm flavours given pride of place - Hibiscus, Red Dalia, Zinnia, Rose, Sweet Violet and pink blossom. The waterfall's crest was designed as an upright freestanding structure to act as a backdrop to the installation, as well as housing a secret compartment to store hundreds of giveaway lip balms. We then placed a strategically positioned plinth and polaroid-shaped frame, which invited guests to the optimal perspective for photographing their friends on the banks of a 3D waterfall.
